Bad news. Leia again wakes up with a headache, and it is pretty bad. Carrie and I make the decision to the cut the trip short, and leave later today for the Bay Area. Carrie calls the Dr., and we have an appointment to be back home by 9 AM Monday.
While Leia is recovering, the "Wild Three" is again sent out. We head on up to Redwood Nat'l Park, stunned by the beauty of the coastline. The 101 becomes a narrow winding road up here, a far cry from the 101 we know and love in LA.
We turn off to visit the Lady Bird Johnson grove, an old growth area that the former President's wife worked hard to preserve. Alas, they did not allow dogs on the trail, so Sophie stays put, while the boy and I have a look.
The trees are truly amazing, as if they really can touch the sky. Jake is thrilled to find a Banana Slug (which he did spot on his own), and promptly names it ("Banana").
A great place with ferns and numerous flowers as undergrowth; Douglass Firs and Mountain Hemlock (covered in flowers) as the mid-level canopy; and the Redwoods towering over all. The forest is healthy, as indicated by the 2-3 Redwoods on each acre. Any more dense and they will inhibit each other.
Jake and I head back, gas up (of course), and buy some more of that great chowder to take back to the trailer for those left behind.
On the road, we again go on some curvy roads with stunning scenery. Each little town we pass through has its own micro-brewery, an indication of advanced civilization.
All do quite well on the trip down, but are also anxious for getting to our friend Tana's and a nice bed and comfort. Trailer is parked on the side of the road, and we all take showers.
